Heroes for Children advocates for and provides financial and social assistance to families with children (0-22 years of age) battling cancer.
Our vision is that no family with a child battling cancer will fight alone.
Heroes for Children was founded by Larissa Linton and Jenny Dowen in memory of their daughters, Taylor Anne Brewton and Allison “Allie” Leigh Scott who both passed away from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Read more about how these mothers turned their tragedies into their life’s work to help others.
Since 2004, Heroes for Children has provided $5.5 million to more than 5,000 families in need through our financial and social assistance programs. There is no other organization that provides direct and immediate assistance to families with such ease when it comes to restoring normalcy and bringing comfort through each family’s journey.
The spirit of the season lives Deep in the Heart of a Hero. “Texas” means friend, and that is exactly what you have been to families battling childhood cancer in the Lone Star State. Because of you,we have served nearly 600 families and granted almost $500,000 in financial assistance in 2017! Thank you for helping us support these families, so they do not have to fight alone.
Today our families need us more than ever. Just one of the hospitals we serve, diagnoses 300 new children with cancer each year. Sadly, that statistic continues to rise. Treatment averages $600,000 – not including living expenses, Many of our families face eviction and have to chose between lifesaving medication and paying the bills. Even in the best situation, cancer is hard on a family – emotionally, physically, and financially.

When Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas Gulf Coast, our families’ need grew. Since Houston is home to the largest hospital we serve and treats patients across the Texas coast, financial assistance applications for families impacted by the storm increased. Just two weeks after Harvey, we were able to grant additional assistance to these families:
- 55% lost both their home and car in the storm
- 1/3 lost their job due to Harvey
- 70% have a child battling cancer under 10 years old
Originally, our Deep in the Heart of a Hero goal was to raise $100,000 to by the end of the year to help more families in 2018. One hospital social worker explained that we could double or even triple the amount of financial assistance we give to that hospital for families battling childhood cancer, and they would still need more to be able to help every family.
