 Statement of Purpose

HFC Friends supports the mission of Heroes for Children through volunteer efforts to strengthen and expand social and emotional assistance provided to families with children battling cancer. HFC Friends strives to ensure that the special moments in the lives of these children are recognized and celebrated despite their ongoing battle with cancer.

 Membership Events

Members have two get together events during the year. There are no other additional meetings unless a member signs up for a specific committee role.

  • Fall Membership Coffee- Meet and Greet with other HFC Friends members to learn about childhood cancer issues and ways to volunteer for HFC
  • Spring Family Picnic- Members and their families are invited in the spring for a day of fun in the sun

Volunteer Work

HFC Friends will focus on the social assistance provided by Heroes for Children to cancer families at the main hospitals in the area. Volunteer work includes:

  • Holiday Heroes—members shop, wrap, and donate gifts to selected cancer families during the holiday season. The families receive their gifts at a holiday party attended by member volunteers.
  • Valentine’s Party—committee members plan, coordinate, and host a special dinner for cancer parents to include a nice meal and childcare. This event is an opportunity for the parents to have a “date night” while their children enjoy a fun evening of activities.
  • Heroes Milestones— members assist in the coordination of and donations to special events for cancer patients as needs arise throughout the year.
  • General Volunteer work for HFC

   Kadence's Story

Kadence, a little girl from the DFW area, with leukemia has benefited from two programs through HFC Friends.  Kadence and her family were recipients of Holiday Heroes and they attended the Valentine’s Dinner. Kadence and her brother

The following is a little snippet of Kadence’s battle against cancer.

“She was diagnosed with ALL in September of 2008. I was laid off fromKadence Cheering work that same month leaving us scared and worried about bills and medical treatments. We were in the hospital for 9 days until we were allowed to leave. This was her first hospitalization in her whole life it was very hard for all of us. My husband and I spent  our 3 year anniversary watching Kadence get her first round of chemo. Kadence has a brother that’s six years old and is in the first grade. He is a lot of fun for her and he is a GREAT helper with Kadence. My husband remains working full time as I stay at home with Kadence. Kadence’s favorite things are artwork/crafts/coloring, Dora, and playing on the playground. She has so much joy and laughter in her life even when going through such horrible things right now. She trusts very little people due to everyone poking and prodding for the past few months. She is slowly understanding treatments/routines and getting less scared each time…. Regardless, she is happy as can be and living her life the best we can provide for her. Every day is a struggle, every day is a battle. But this is one battle she is not going to lose. We have love, faith, and hope to get her through this hard time. She is going to grow up a stronger girl than she already is. She is the strongest 3 year old I know in life."
